The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was Nintendo's second American release. The first units landed on shelves in August, 1991. The Japanese version, released a year earlier, had already taken root, but in America the SNES was late to market. Sega Mega Drive, better known as the Sega Genesis, had beaten it to the shelves. Despite its late start, the system and the Nintendo name proved to be enduring, and it eventually outsold its direct predecessor by the time it was removed from stores.
